Soft lenses are the most popular type of lens in the UK. They are made from special polymers that have an affinity for water. Generally it is their water content that gives them their softness. Most soft lenses are now used on a frequent replacement or disposable basis being changed monthly, two weekly or even daily.

Developments in soft lenses mean that astigmatism can now be corrected in most cases through toric lens design and lenses are available to completely change the colour of even the darkest eyes.

The most recent development in soft contact lens design is the advent of Silicone Hydrogel. This revolutionary material allows much more oxygen through to the cornea. This enables the lens to be worn safely on an extended wear basis. The material also has the benefit of having a much lower water content and hence can be used as a fix for dry eyes associated with contact lens wear. The most recent of these is ACUVUE OASYS by Johnson and Johnson, which is replaced either weekly or two weekly and has the added benefit of HYDROCLEAR PLUS - an internal lubricant that re-wets the lens on a continual basis with every blink.

ACUVUE TRUEYE is the first daily disposable Silicone Hydrogel lens, combining hassle free wear with the reassurance of maximum oxygen permeability. Other Silicone Hydrogel are replaced on a monthly basis
